THE CRUISING INDUSTRY
Cruise shipping is growing at a phenomenal rate globally and also in Australia. There is growing international recognition that Australia is a safe, diverse and interesting destination for cruising.

In the North American leisure tourism sector, cruise tourism has had an average growth of 8% over the past ten years. The industry generated $20 billion globally and carried approximately 11 million passengers in 2005.

In response to market demand, the cruise industry today is characterised by new innovative vessels and itineraries, more ports available to cruise ships, renewed demand for exotic, remote or new ports, increased attention to quality and service standards, with a younger, more active and diverse group of people taking cruises and strong brand marketing.

In 2005, about 90% of the worldwide cruise capacity was deployed in six regions:

  • Caribbean / Bahamas, 50%
  • Mediterranean, 15%
  • Alaska, 6.7%
  • Mexican Riviera, 6.6%
  • Western and Northern Europe, 5%
  • Asia / Pacific (including Australia), 5%
