TASPORTS
The Tasmanian Ports Corporation Pty Ltd (Tasports) is a registered, private company fully owned by the Tasmanian Government. The company was created 1 January 2006, following amalgamation of the State's four port companies – Hobart Ports Corporation Pty Ltd, Port of Launceston Pty Ltd, Port of Devonport Corporation Pty Ltd and Burnie Port Corporation Pty Ltd.

Tasports is responsible for the operations and management of all ports in Tasmania and facilitates trade for the benefit of Tasmania, through the commercial provision of infrastructure and services. Tasports works closely with shipping agents, providores, tour operators, and all other interested parties to ensure that all aspects of a cruise ship visit are addressed including safety, environmental and security issues.

In addition to the wharf facilities Tasports provides pilotage, mooring lines and security services and can arrange for the provision of fresh water and garbage collections if required. Tasports levies a range of charges for these services.

A number of other services including towage and provedoring are also available if required.

Port Security

Since September 11 2001, security of ports has become a big issue around the world and international security standards for ports and port infrastructure have been developed. This has meant a change in how wharfs are managed at ports around Australia and all Tasmanian ports now operate under Federal legislation encapsulated in the Maritime Transport and Offshore Facilities Security Act 2003. This Act establishes a regulatory framework that safeguards and protects ships, ports and port facilities within Australia.

The Maritime Transport and Offshore Facilities Security Act 2003 is enforced by the Federal Department of Transport and Regional Services (DoTARS), and has placed a number of requirements on port operators including the need to maintain adequate levels of access control to ensure that only authorised persons are able to enter port facilities. Security requirements relating to all Tasports facilities are managed by Tasports Port Services Department.

(Cruise ship tonnage ranges from less than 5,000 to over 100,000). MAST is responsible for the management of all vessels, licensing of operators and overseeing a wide range of marine facilities.
